Slow Down – The Quiet Revolution

There’s no getting away from the fact that the COVID-19 crisis is massively disruptive to our economy, our work, our education, our families and is set to completely rearrange our daily lives. What we’re experiencing is unprecedented and has all the hallmarks of a science-fiction novel or apocalyptic movie.

But have you noticed how quiet it’s gotten?

No school.  People working from home. No events to attend.  Nowhere to go. Less traffic. We’re being forced to slow down, there’s a new spaciousness in our daily lives without the pressure and urgency of having to be somewhere, or to participate in an event.

We now have the opportunity to spend meaningful time with our friends, our families and our beloveds.  And while we’re being urged to practice social distancing, we are also being encouraged to take a walk (albeit around the balcony or garden) and to closely contemplate our relationship with nature.

We’re hoping that’s what people are going to do. We’re hoping that a quiet revolution is taking place as we slow down, connect with the natural world, lower our cortisol levels and raise the power of our immune systems. We’re hoping that by slowing down, we’re going to realise it feels a whole lot better than the mad, hectic rushing around we‘re so used to doing.

We’re hoping we’ll stop yearning for ‘things to go back to normal’ and in the process of having to self-isolate and practice a new way of living, start creating a completely NEW kind of normal that we won’t want to let go off when inevitably, this crisis ends. A new normal that includes quietness, soulful reflection, connection to the living world around us.  Let’s make that a personal promise.
